Community There are many different possible types of service ashrams, but in most cases, it will not only be open to the community, but will encourage the community to get involved. There are many people who would like to serve for shorter periods - even for a few hours - without becoming a fellow. It is the fellows who will sustain the foundation of intention. On top of their commitment, all kinds of activities can arise. In many cases, people can self-organize. It is also nice to have simple projects always on hand that people can plug into such as gardening, letter-writing to prisoners, random acts of kindness, etc. It is wise to have one or more project directors specifically focused on always having volunteer opportunities on hand. The space itself will be a natural magnet and a hub for service-oriented activity. The value of this alone is awesome. It is also possible to provide services to the public such as the Seva Café that can both foster and utilize volunteerism. |
